Legal and ethical aspects of downloading content from Instagram

So I’ve been wondering about this lately. A few days ago I wanted to save a short video from Instagram because it had a cooking trick I really liked, but the account was public and didn’t have any save option in the app itself. I ended up just screen recording it, but it felt a bit sketchy. Do you guys think downloading stuff like that is fine if it’s only for personal use and not for reposting? I don’t want to step on anyone’s toes, but at the same time, it seems weird that something posted publicly can’t be easily saved.

I’ve had the same situation with travel clips. I like keeping them offline so I can watch when I don’t have internet, and sometimes I even share them in a private family chat. From what I’ve read, it’s not a huge problem if you keep it just for yourself, but reposting without credit is where it gets tricky. I usually just use download video IG whenever I want to save something quickly. Honestly, it’s way simpler than screen recording, and the quality comes out much better. I think the key is just being respectful of the creator and not treating it like free stock footage.

I don’t really save videos much, but I do know friends who collect little clips from socials for moodboards or just to get ideas for their hobbies. It’s funny because half the time they forget where the clip came from, and it just ends up in a random folder with memes and recipes. I guess for most people it’s just convenience, like keeping a digital scrapbook rather than thinking about ownership every time.
